Comparing Car Insurance Rates: State by State

2.jpg

Try to compare car insurance rates by state and you’re going to find that the differences between each are astronomical. Every state has its own rules and regulations governing the way car insurance carriers can set their rates but each has its own crime statistics, accident rates and driver history data to draw from as well.

These differences can make getting car insurance rate comparisons by state very difficult. You may quote similar coverage options and get prices that are incredibly high or low compared to the area in which you are living right now. Over the past year, however, some states have seen a significant decrease in their insurance rates while others have seen an increase. We recommend starting your search with some of the lowest rated states.

States with the Lowest Auto Insurance Rates

As of October of 2009, RateWatch, an organization that compares rates annually, indicated that there were at least 20 states that saw a significant decrease in car insurance rates. The state of Wyoming saw the highest decrease, with rates dropping an average of $17%. The average annual cost of insurance in these states ranged from approximately $2,000 down to $1,300.

It is important to remember that when comparing car insurance rates by state you cannot simply look at the percentage of decrease each state received. While the state of Wyoming saw a decrease of just over 17%, the annual rate averages around $1,500. Vermont, on the other hand, only saw an 8% decrease and averages rates around $1,300. Obviously, their rates were lower to begin with.

States with the Highest Auto Insurance Rate

While most states saw significant to moderate decreases in premium over the past year, there were a handful that actually saw increases in auto insurance rates. If you are comparing car insurance rates by state you will find that the states of New Jersey, Maryland, Kentucky, and Florida have astronomically high rates. The average driver pays anywhere from $2,000 to $2,700 to insure his vehicle in those states. Most of these states are very congested, or have a few very congested areas, increasing the likelihood of a driver being involved in an accident and, as such, driving insurance rates through the roof.
